How do FRC competitions work?

The robotics competitions we attend are part of FIRST Robotics Competition. The competitions are huge events with 50-60 teams from all around the world (but our competitions are mostly Minnesota teams). They can be a bit confusing to those new to these competitions, so here’s a quick primer on how they work:

  • Teams compete in 3 vs. 3 matches to see which robot can perform the competition challenges the best.
  • There are practice matches on Thursday.
  • Qualification matches take place on Friday and Saturday morning:
    • Teams earn ranking points for doing well in qualification matches.
    • The ranking points determine team standings.
  • On Saturday, the top 8 teams with the most ranking points get to select two other teams to compete on an alliance with them in the finals matches.
  • Finals matches are organized in a double elimination tournament format.

It’s a super busy 3 days of matches, but it is a blast for everybody involved!

How can you Watch Us?

The competition is livestreamed! See the QR code below to find the livestream. We do not know which matches we will be competing in yet, but they will be listed on the website starting on Thursday afternoon or Friday morning. Matches are numbered (Match 1, Match 2, Match 3, …), so you will be able to know when our matches are coming up! Use the Team # filter to find our matches–our team number is 3691!
